The Archaeology of Water Supply in Wales

Discover the fascinating history of water supply infrastructure in Wales with the Association for Industrial Archaeology Young Members Board

The infrastructure of water supply is an impressive feat of engineering – and has produced contested landscapes which figure prominently in narratives of Welsh nationalism. Although some of the more substantial structures and features were noted in the Historic Environment Records (HER), the archaeology of aspects of their construction was less well understood.

There is a threat through climate change: not only from increased flooding events, but also from changes that may be made to mitigate the risk of those events such as removal and alterations to weirs and other infrastructure. CPAT completed a Cadw grant-aided project aimed to undertake a thorough assessment of the assets, consider them as part of the wider landscape, and to understand community narratives resultant from the water supply schemes.

During this seminar, we will discuss the methodology of undertaking archaeological research during a pandemic, the schematics and infrastructure of water supply and finally a discussion of the report outcomes.

Questions are welcome, we look forward to seeing you there.
