A fantastic opportunity to hear about the rich and diverse work carried out by the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) team across the country.

Making the Most of PAS Data

This online session will highlight the valuable contribution of metal-detecting finds for advancing archaeological knowledge, but also consider the challenges for the PAS in responding to the growth of metal-detecting. Papers will explore the basic problem, how PAS might strategically respond to this, and how the public (such as CBA members) could be involved.

  1. Too many finds, too few recorders  (Michael Lewis, Head PAS).

  2. The research value of PAS data - medieval case study  (Rob Webley, MeRit project).

  3. PAS finds in a landscape context (Ed Caswell, Oxfordshire FLO).

  4. PAS finds and regional research frameworks (Ben Westwood, Co. Durham FLO).

  5. Discussion and questions.

The talks will be 10-15min each, followed by discussion and questions.
