Gareth Carr, architect and lecturer at Wrexham Glyndwr University, will look at development through the Welsh Streets in Liverpool.
Gareth Carr will explore developers, landowners, family estates and small-scale builders and speculative development through the history of the Welsh Streets in Liverpool. He will trace the demographic change, economic trends, the mismatch between demand and supply which led to 20th century decline and the destructive ‘Pathfinder’ programme and subsequent campaigns to save the Welsh Streets.
Gareth is a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design Technology and Construction Management at Wrexham Glyndwr University, and is an alumnus of Liverpool School of Architecture. His particular research interests include the career of Richard Owens (1831-91); an architect/surveyor responsible for orchestrating the development of over three-hundred acres of speculative terraced housing in Liverpool between 1862 and 1891. Gareth’s research in this historical context is his antidote to having to teach twenty-first century construction management!
