This Is Archaeology - Farming Rathcroghan: Where Farming and Archaeology meets, at Connacht’s Royal Site, Co Roscommon, Ireland

An online talk with Alan Healy

How do you protect archaeology in a landscape that is also lived in, worked, and farmed every day?

This talk draws on the experience of the Farming Rathcroghan Project to explore the practical meeting point between archaeology and pastural farming, from drystone wall conservation to targeted works on earthen monuments. It examines the everyday and seasonal pressures that affect monuments, including weathering, erosion, livestock, machinery management and considers how conservation can be balanced. It also reflects on how further research and wider archaeological work across the region, including infrastructure-led investigations, can help place Rathcroghan in its broader context and inform future research. While also concentrating on stronger long-term community stewardship through engagement with local schools, the farmers of the future.
