Isotopic analysis and the DNA revolution have opened our eyes to the amount of human movement that was going on in prehistory, and analytical project such as the French-led Projet JADE on Alpine ‘jade’ axeheads have revealed the incredible distances travelled by some artefacts many millennia ago.

This lecture looks at what was moving into, out of, and around Britain and Ireland between 4300 BC and 1500 BC, how, and why. It will explore not only movement of people and objects, but also of ideas; and it will examine prehistoric views on the movement of dead people’s souls. Most importantly, it will set this account of movements within its broader European perspective.
