Excavations in the Praetentura: 9 Blake Street
A report on the excavations in the praetentura of the Roman legionary fortress in York which were undertaken in advance of redevelopment in 1975-6. The earliest evidence for occupation dated to the Flavian period, which accords with the commonly accepted date of AD 71-4 for York’s foundation. Timber structures were found from the late 1st century, which were replaced by stone buildings in the mid-2nd century. Activity declines from the 3rd century onwards. Finds included painted wall plaster and a collection of lamps.
