Culver Archaecological Project - Fieldwork and Finds Unit Volunteers
The Culver Archaeological Project (CAP) involves the local community, students, trained archaeologists and volunteers in the investigation of the historic environment under the supervision of the project director, Robert Wallace, a Masters Graduate in Field Archaeology from the University of Sussex. CAP was founded in 2005 to investigate the historic landscape surrounding the Barcombe villa complex near Lewes.
The investigation of the Romano-British settlement at Bridge Farm is now in its 15th year and last year Trench 8 was opened. There is evidence of a newly discovered Roman road from Pevensey entering the settlement and connecting with the established Roman road to London. Finds are extensive on this large site. Pottery, brooches, coins, metal work, building material, slag, timber and even Roman sandals.
