Epiacum Heritage are delighted to announce their latest permissive route, “Ancient Routes” which connects the South Tynedale Trail and the Pennine Way, and picks up some of the paths and trackways which were used in various eras – Medieval, Roman and Reiver. You can connect from the railway path which runs between Alston and Slaggyford or directly from the car park at The Nook Farm Shop & Café [CA9 3BG] to enjoy this circular 2.5km walk. Bring your boots, your imagination and enjoy a walk through 3000 years of history!
Using funds from the Farming in a Protected Landscape Initiative via DEFRA and the North Pennines AONB, the site is more accessible to provide this new permissive route. Enhanced by some outstanding reconstruction images by Dextra Visual, the trail helps convey how this landscape has evolved, right up to the present day. Special thanks to the volunteers (Second Nervians) and various partners – Marcus Byron (leaflets and interpretation), Martin Moss (Dextra Visual) and Brampton Woodwork (gates and finger posts).
The route is sited on a working upland farm so please keep dogs on leads and follow the Countryside Code at all times. Clothing suitable for the changeable North Pennines weather is recommended. The site is not suitable for wheelchair users.
