Volunteering with York Archaeology

York Archaeology provides a variety of opportunities for individuals to engage with heritage and archaeological work. These include volunteering roles and structured work placements designed to support both public engagement and behind-the-scenes operations.

Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteers contribute across multiple areas, including public-facing roles at attractions and events, as well as supporting collections, archives, and fieldwork teams. These roles are open to individuals aged 18 and over, regardless of prior experience in archaeology or heritage. Volunteers help facilitate access to historical resources and enhance visitor engagement.

Work Placements
Placements are tailored for those seeking focused experience in the heritage sector, including students and individuals considering a career change. Typically lasting around 10 days over two to three weeks, placements offer practical exposure to archaeological and heritage work. Longer-term arrangements may be available through university partnerships, and flexible volunteering roles are also an option for extended experience.

For individuals under 18, school-based placements are available through specific partnerships.
