Community Archaeology at the University of Salford

The Centre for Applied Archaeology at the University of Salford has a long-standing involvement in community archaeology, both in the UK and internationally. Its work includes research into public engagement, health and wellbeing impacts, and current practices in the field. The Centre maintains a substantial archive of community projects and collaborates with local archaeology societies and volunteers.

Activities include:

  • Managing and conducting archaeological evaluations, excavations, and building surveys with volunteers of all ages.
  • Supporting local heritage groups with funding applications.
  • Assisting the Greater Manchester Archaeology Advisory Service (GMAAS) and the Greater Manchester Federation of Archaeological Societies.

Volunteering Opportunities Volunteers can participate in excavations across Greater Manchester, learning techniques such as geophysical surveying, recording, and historical research. No prior experience is required—just interest and enthusiasm. Volunteers can contribute as much time as they wish and gain hands-on experience while connecting with others who share an interest in history.
