Roots and Futures is a free, interactive mobile app that invites people to help uncover the history behind one of Yorkshire’s oldest industrial areas by submitting photos and stories of the landmarks that matter to them. Launched earlier this Spring during lockdown, the app enables people to delve into the history of north Sheffield while maintaining social distancing, keeping active or even without leaving their own homes. The archaeology and historic buildings trails enable users to explore both the buried heritage beneath their feet, and the hidden past of buildings they see every day. The interactive Your Sheffield Map invites everyone to share their own photos, memories and stories of north Sheffield. The project behind the app is a collaboration between the Univesity of Sheffield's Department of Archaeology, Kelham Island Museum, community groups Zest,Kelham Island and Neepsend Community Alliance and environmental consultancy ECUS. The information collected by the app will allow us to understand more about how the community values Sheffield heritage and how archaeology can contribute to an incusive and representitive story of the city's past.
