Mini-digs, Roman mosaics and hands-on history: youth-friendly Festival events this summer
This year’s Festival theme explores the connections between archaeology and nature, with events taking place across the UK. From mini-digs and object handling to Roman mosaics, prehistoric flint tools and outdoor discovery activities, the Festival is a unique chance for young people to get hands-on with the past.
Whether you are planning a family day out, looking for something creative to do during the summer holidays, or supporting a young person with a growing interest in history and archaeology, there are lots of youth-friendly events to explore.

Haiku Competition
Our Festival of Archaeology competition is now open, and this year we’re asking you to write a haiku inspired by archaeology and nature. There are two categories: under-18 and 18+, so young people can take part too! Winners will receive a bundle of nature and archaeology themed prizes, including a family membership to the RSPB for under-18s!
To enter, submit your original haiku through the Festival website by the 3rd August.
Online Family Friendly Events
Not able to make it in-person? No problem! We have a range of online family-friendly digital events so that you can still take part from wherever you are.
Throughout the Festival, we will also be releasing fun family-friendly activities like an Eye-Spy Explorer pack, Youth Day Activity Pack exploring archaeology and nature, and more.
