Letters to a Young Archaeologist 2023

Engaging young people to participate in archaeology is one of the main objectives of the CBA.

With this in mind, last year we launched Letters to a Young Archaeologist, a monthly publication addressed to those considering a career in archaeology through the fictional figure of the “young archaeologist”, in partnership with Birbeck, University of London. You can view our 2022 letters at the bottom of this page.

We’re thrilled to be continuing the series in 2023, taking the additional step of involving young people directly. Every month this year, we will be inviting key organisations in the sector to write, record, film or create a letter, and young people involved in that organisation to respond – or vice versa.

We are so excited to hear from so many different voices who will make a difference to archaeology.

In 2022 we asked archaeologists, academics, and enthusiasts to write a letter to the fictional figure of the 'young archaeologist'. Whether they choose to tell their story, give advice, focus on the positives or warn against the negatives, their 'Letter to a Young Archaeologist', just as our sector does itself, looks towards the future while continuing to uncover the past.
