World Maritime Day: Celebrating Maritime Archaeology
On this World Maritime Day, we're diving deep into the incredible world of maritime archaeology—a field that uncovers the hidden history beneath our seas, lakes, and rivers. Today, we’re highlighting some key resources, organisations, and events that will help you explore this exciting field.
Nautical Archaeology Society
Did you know that the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) was originally founded as the Committee for Nautical Archaeology under the CBA? NAS has since grown into one of the leading charities dedicated to promoting maritime archaeology. They provide training, resources, and events for enthusiasts and professionals alike, including a volunteer run archaeological dive club .
This is Archaeology Lecture: Maritime Archaeology – It’s Not Just Shipwrecks by Peta Knott
Earlier this year, we hosted a This is Archaeology lecture with Peta Knott from NAS, who reminded us that maritime archaeology encompasses so much more than shipwrecks! From submerged landscapes to harbours and lost settlements, Peta’s talk provides a fascinating look into the broad scope of underwater archaeology, highlighting a variety of site types from the UK and overseas. Plus, Peta provides tips for heritage practitioners and history enthusiasts on how to share the excitement of all aspects of maritime archaeology with those interested.

Virtual Dive Trails and VR Experiences
Thanks to advances in technology, you don’t have to leave your home to explore the depths. Historic England has created virtual reality dive trails that allow people to ‘dive’ into significant shipwrecks and underwater sites without getting wet! These VR trails bring underwater cultural heritage to life and allow a wider audience to engage with the wonders of maritime archaeology. Explore them here.
If you’re intrigued by the mysteries of the deep, check out the Black Sea Shipwrecks—one of the largest underwater archaeological discoveries ever made. This project revealed ancient shipwrecks over 2 km below the surface, some dating back over 2,500 years. Thanks to photogrammetry and deep-sea robotics, you can now experience these incredible sites from the comfort of your home using virtual reality. Explore the shipwreck in VR here.
Maritime Archaeology Trust's Discovery Hub:
The Maritime Archaeology Trust (MAT) offers a fantastic Discovery Hub filled with educational resources, videos, booklets, and interactive experiences on topics like shipwrecks, submerged landscapes, and climate change. Key themes include careers in maritime archaeology, climate and coastal change, and women in maritime. Check out their resources here: Explore Now.
On this World Maritime Day, we invite you to explore the wonders of our heritage hidden under the waves and discover the crucial role maritime archaeology plays in understanding our past.
